2009 Football Season Ends

2010 season begins Monday.

shsvsgv2009-0245_std

As I mentioned previously, this year’s varsity football season has been one of character building (AKA we lost more than we won).  It was harder still coming off two historic SHS football seasons when we went deep into the playoffs.  I would have loved for Tyler to have felt that electricity.  But, for every winner there is one who goes home disappointed, and those storybook seasons are few and far between—that’s why they make movies about them.

You’ll notice I’ve become a little philosophical about the whole thing…  It saddens me when students and parents support the team less based on the W-L record.  No matter what, our boys put in a tremendous effort week in and week out. There is honor in that.  It’s a challenge when he goes to church with friends from a variety of high schools (most predominantly a certain high school which shall not be named) and it’s hard to keep your swagger when your team isn’t winning and theirs is and they (mostly)good-naturedly tease you about it.

However, there were many successes…

He felt the camaraderie of being part of a team.

His snaps were consistent throughout the season.  Even the long snaps.  At the beginning of the season, I would get nervous for him every time he had to long snap and I almost couldn’t watch.  But, after a while I figured out he wasn’t going to miss.

He developed his blocking.

fightHe also developed his reputation—he’s not always Mr. Nice Guy.

He nearly wore through his helmet.  There was a stripe that went down the middle.  Gone.  Silver paint, gone.  I’m told this is good. (?)

He also learned to like and how to order sushi.

Our school has a tradition.  On the night prior to a game, the quarterback feeds the offensive line.  This not only encourages more flesh will be between the QB and the defenders, but also shows appreciation to the line for putting their bodies in harm’s way to protect the QB. Well, this set of boys preferred sushi as their pre-game meal.  Tyler is now on a first name basis with “Kenny” the sushi chef and showed off his skills for Bryce and I last Friday.  Bryce is not convinced sushi is a good thing.

He stayed healthy and whole. This is the biggest success of all.

Mercy Me

Dateline:  November 7, 2009

Location:  Canyon High School Football Field

Event:  Junior Warrior football game v. Junior Canyon Green

There is a rule in our Pop Warner football league which states that if a team goes up by 25 or more points, then the opposing team may select 6 players to sit out from play.  Bryce’s team has been fairly successful this season and therefore this rule has been invoked several times against us.  Typically, the other team will pull out the quarterback, receivers and running backs. You know, the guys who get all the big time plays.  Smart teams pull out the center and parts of the Offensive Line.  It’s always a show of respect for those players who are pulled out.

On November 7th, Bryce not only started, he got pulled under the mercy rule.  It was awesome.

Justin's BYU adventures Part 8: The Home Stretch!!

The past couple weeks have been pretty intense. Lets start with Nov 2-6. I had a Mission Prep Midterm on Tuesday, followed promptly by a Bio midterm on Friday. After countless hours in the library (including 1 or 2 times until midnight) i made it through the week. This marked the first time that i studied on Friday...and i was not a huge fan.
The following week, the 9th-13th certainly did not get any easier. I had an American Heritage Midterm that i took on Wednesday, a mission prep Preach my Gospel outline due on Tuesday and a 3-page paper analyzing the Crusades due on Thursday. Monday and Tuesday i was in the library until midnight studying for American Heritage, and Wednesday i was in the library until midnight again writing my paper. In between classes i found just enough time to finish that mission prep outline...needless to say I was extremely exhausted by the time the week was over.
This week hasn't been terrible, but it still hasn't been easy. Tomorrow i have a 5-7 page research paper due in American Heritage, and i am proud to say that i finished it last night in the library!!! This may be the first time I haven't procrastinated at all...and it feels pretty good.
So now, after 3 weeks of intense school work and hours and hours at the library...i can finally take a deep breath!! Thanksgiving next week!! California next week!! Seeing my friends and family next week!!! Football game this weekend!! Oh...AND TONIGHT IM GOING TO AN EXCLUSIVE IN N OUT DINNER for employees friends/family, and i get to order as much in n out as i want...FOR FREE!!!!!!!!!!
So now i get a nice little break...and then just a few more weeks of school. I'm in the home stretch now...time to finish strong!

You CAN take the Utah out of the boy…

This is my cute Utah boy

at a California football game.

He has at least 5 layers on,

hand warmers,

and still whined about the cold.

I guess we should cut him some slack…

He was born in L.A.

Justin's BYU adventures Part 7: Halloween!

So, my calling in the ward is Co-chair of the activities committee. Therefore, i was in charge of organizing the ward's Halloween Dance. So on October 30th we had our ward's Halloween dance, and I think it turned out pretty good. There was dancing, games and pizza. One of the games we played was a pie-eating contest. Let's just say never eat a pie with your face unless you absolutely have to. Aside from it getting all over me, I had banana cream and whipped cream in my nose the rest of the night. As soon as i started eating, it went in my nose and, needless to say, I had trouble breathing for the remainder of the contest haha.

On Halloween Night, we all went to Josh and Courtney's house for a little, and went Trick or Treating in their neighborhood. And no Mom, we are not too old for Trick or Treating. After that, we went to a Haunted Village in Salt Lake. We basically walk on a trail and people just jump out and scare us. It was a lot of fun and I only got scared a little bit haha. After the haunted village, we watched a "scary" movie at Daniel Pickard's house. We can't figure out why scary movies always are bad. But whatever it was fun...
